I'm currently reading the "Handbook of Japanese Mythology" by Micheal Ashkenazi and here a bit you might find interesting:<br />"the two deities resolved to walk around the pillar, he from the left, she from the right, meet again and have conjugal intercourse...Izanagi too was delighted to see her, but her reproved her, saying it was unseemly for the woman to speak first. They commenced procreation, but gave birth to a leech child without arms or legs...then to an island. Distressed, they consulted the senior deities, who informed them that the problem was the result of Izanami having improperly spoken first" Once Izanami follows orders, she then gives birth to the islands of Japan.Fat Hamnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5224471383814317075.post-34737766809858092632010-06-01T09:34:30.932-04:002010-06-01T09:34:30.932-04:00I read a book a month or so ago but i can't re...I read a book a month or so ago but i can't recal who wrote it... :S It was about the history, mythology and botany of the Yew tree. I remember a passage that said that Amaterasu was recorded as a male diety before Amaterasu became female. It was only mentioned briefly and I can't remember where the research came from, sorry... but still, thought you might find it interesting?<br />I first came across Amaterasu in Tad Williams fantasy novel 'The Dragonbone Chair' - not really relevant because it's not really anything to do with her myths but it still leaves you with a lovely feel for Amaterasu :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5224471383814317075.post-36407735457614083002010-06-01T01:44:58.001-04:002010-06-01T01:44:58.001-04:00Oh that's right you're in Canada.
